Have an ECO - New Year

Wow! Our Primary School Eco-monitors are a positive example of how we should all strive to be more ECO-FRIENDLY in our daily actions.

We want to highlight the great job that they are doing all year long.

Let's keep them in our minds as we make our own New Years Resolutions during our upcoming break.

Have a great Winter Holiday! Stay Green!

Recycling in Action at RWA!

Do you know what actually happens to your trash after you put it in the bin?
Where does your recycling go?

The primary Eco-Team members learned all about trash and recycling from the education team of SUEZ Environment company.

They got to see up close the equipment and machines used to efficiently keep our neighborhood clean. Keep your eyes out around campus for the SUEZ bins - and make sure to use them!

Ask your E-Team members to tell you about what they have learned!

Suez staff and the primary school E-Team pick up trash around the school.

Another great lesson from SUEZ!

Our trash goes there?

E-Team in Action!

On Monday the 9th of November 30 members of the secondary school E-Team came together to make the Dubai beaches better. Sponsored by SUEZ Environment company, the beach clean was a great success!

Our very energetic and motivated members cleaned 5.16 kg of trash from the beach!

A HUGE THANK YOU to SUEZ / SITA TrashCo for organizing, educating, and supporting the E-Team with souvenirs and badges for the winning team.

The day started with a lesson from the SUEZ team for the RWA students about beach cleaning machines - which are great - but that need a helping human hand to get the beaches spotless!

The Suez sponsors helped organizing teams and equipping them with bags, water, and trash grabbers.

Making a difference on the iconic beaches of Dubai!

Weighing the waste!

Congratulations to the RWA E-Team for a job well done!

Primary School ECO-MONITORS

We are very proud of our Primary School ECO MONITORS!
The Primary School ECO-MONITORS are in charge of encouraging their peers (and teachers) to be more eco friendly.
They promote good practices like conserving water and waste, and using the recycling bins properly. They will remind you when you forget and congratulate you when you remember!

Give them a high-five when you see them around!

Welcome Back

Welcome back to RWA everybody!

It's been a record breaking hot summer! Here are a few interesting articles to get you thinking about YOUR environmental impact, here in the UAE and wherever you were over the summer.

EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY
was August 13th - the earliest on record.

Earth Overshoot Day is like the day when we start overdrawing our bank account for the year: As of August 13th, we have already spent the Earth's Ecological Budget for the year.

Just 45 years ago, in 1970, our ecological budget lasted until December 23rd.
Where will we be 45 years from now?

To learn more check out:  http://www.overshootday.org/

We know that the UAE loves to make records, well on June 2nd the UAE was
"THE HOTTEST PLACE IN THE WORLD" with recorded temperatures of 50.5 degrees C.

Survey Results

At the end of this year we asked our students to answer 2 questions in order to gage their attitudes. Here are the results and a brief analysis below. We will repeat this at the end of 2015-2016 to see if there has been any changes in behaviors and attitudes at RWA.

The first question aimed to measure the behavior of the students with regard to recycling:

  • A majority of people admitted that they only recycle "sometimes" - this is probably a very good indication of actual recycling at matches our observations. Many do it when it is convenient, but do not do when the bins are far away or not clearly marked.
  • Many (31%) said they always recycle, which is probably an exaggeration, but shows good intentions by the students.

The second question aimed to measure the attitudes of the students about the E-team:

  • Overall it seems that the E-team has a GOOD reputation, but there is surely some room for improvement.
  • We feel that we do a lot of good work, but we will do better. Also, improving visibility and awareness raising will improve the effectiveness of the E-team as it will become more popular.

And the winner is ... RWA!

It gives me immense pleasure to announce that our efforts in reducing the pollution caused by the cars has been rewarded and RWA has been declared as the winner of the
" Clean The Air We Breathe"
Inter school competition 2015

Thanks to all the students, parents and teachers who showed their concern for the environment by planting a tree/a plant.

On Tuesday 23rd June our School will be presented with a plaque and certificate in recognition of their NOx Pollution Neutral Effect environment by Clean Energy Business Council. As well we will be offered a painted area (free of charges), near the street and/or car park sufficient to offset the vehicles and busses arriving/departing in the school area, each day for the last 100m of emissions.

Getting the heat on at RWA!

While all our students are stressed about exams these past few weeks, they can be proud that their Solar Project was featured on Emirates 24/7 News

Great work! Great initiative!

Solar Energy Science Exam study question:
Can you name the energy transfers that happened in your solar cooking project?
When you cooked the noodles, was that a chemical or physical change?

Good Luck to all!

Tree Planting Competition!

As part of  National Schools Environment Protection Program, RWA will participate in the Clean Energy Business Council’s inter school competition , to help reduce air pollution caused by the cars.

* The Competition - ‘Clean The Air We Breathe’

* Students from the participating schools can plant a tree or plant anywhere, any time of day during the competition period and thus purify the air around us we breathe.
* The teachers/parents must send individual photos to me (Mrs. Jaya Butani or Mrs. Trayle Kulshan, latest by 11th June 2015) showing them planting a tree/plant.
* The school with the highest percentage of submissions (1 entry=1 tree/plant planted) will be announced the winner. (based on total number of students attending the school)
* This competition is open to students of all ages and year groups.

* The Prize
The Winner will be presented with a plaque and certificate in recognition of their NOx Pollution Neutral Effect environment.

The Winning School will be offered a painted area (free of charges), near the street and/or car park sufficiant to offset the vehicles and busses arriving/departing in the school area, each day for the last 100m of emissions.

The Winning School will be given the choice of rather painting their external roof adjacent to the AC input with Airlite Paint which will help purify the air, increase the building’s energy efficiency and clean the air going into the Air Conditioning System.

* Time Frame
Competition begins on 20 May 2015
Last day for submission of entries closes on 13 June 2015
Participating Schools must notify CEBC of their total number of trees planted by 15 June 2015
(and send a compiled file with the pictures)
The Winning School will be announced on 18 June 2015

The winning school
:
Painting of the school building exterior (colour in accordance with school), will take place over the summer holiday at a convenient time agreed to by the Winning School and Airlite Paint. The Italian company Airlite has created a special paint that is based on the photocatalysis principle where the pollutants in the air are decomposed and naturally transformed into inert salts and thus neutralises the damaging effects of car emissions and helps purify the air. One square metre of paint reduces air pollution as effectively as one mature tree. (The Paint has the added benefit of significantly cooling a building/roof and ‘scrubbing’ input air to the AC system which improves energy efficiency and creates a healthier environment for our children).
